Tesla received $40 million worth of orders as they announced their latest crossover Model X car. Faster than a Porsche Carrera, and powered by a single or dual motor, the crossover won't be available until 2014.

It will be offered with 3 drivetrain options: single rear-wheel drive motor, all-wheel drive with front and rear motors, and dual front and performance all-wheel drive with front and rear motors.

Priced between $60,000 and $85,000 The Tesla Model X is expected to compete with the Mercedes-Benz R-Class crossover, the Audi Q7, BMW X6 Sport Activity Coupe, the Infinity FX crossover, and maybe the Cadillac CTX-V. It will be built at Tesla's Fremont, CA plant, hopefully creating additional good paying manufacturing green jobs.

With 500 orders on the day of the announcement, with a 2-year delivery wait (the first deliveries are expected in early 2014), the Model X is the hottest vehicle of the moment. Maybe it's because of its unique Falcon Wing doors that open up and out of the way, allowing one to stand up in the second row and step directly to the third row.
