Cogentrix Energy, LLC is a leading independent power producer with a long track record of developing, constructing, and operating power generation assets, and marketing wholesale power to utility customers produced at these assets. Cogentrix has achieved superior returns and effectively managed market risks over an extended timeframe by staying focused on the generation sector and adhering to its own steady process discipline. Founded in 1983 by an experienced and entrepreneurial power engineer, George Lewis, Cogentrix adopted a business model that deployed standardized, cost-effective generating plant designs under long term power agreements to creditworthy utility customers. Today, Cogentrix continues to deploy its core strengths in the areas of development, acquisition, power marketing, construction, operation and management of power assets in expanding its power portfolio.
Cogentrix is embarking on what it believes will be an exciting, high value and profitable new chapter in the Company’s growth story. The combination of a growing demand for renewable generation, and the need for reliable, efficient and clean thermal generation resources characterizes an industry in which an experienced, well-respected development firm with a strong track record and substantial internal resources is positioned for success. Accordingly, Cogentrix is now focused on the development of predominantly renewable and other low-emission generating resources, and the acquisition of contracted or “contractable” merchant generation that exhibit opportunities to materially enhance value through environmental improvements, operational enhancement and power marketing.
Cogentrix Energy is an indirect, wholly-owned subsidiary of The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc.
